City Priorities

Beginning in late 2007, the City of Sanibel began the process of holding classes for contractors who need to meet requirements under the City's new Fertilizer Control Ordinance. While public education efforts regarding fertilizer continue, the City is working to train and certify all contractors who use fertilizer and work with vegetation on the Island.

The City has proposed four projects under the Northern Everglades and Estuaries Protection Plan that it believes will improve local waters. The projects are: Adding a Stormwater Treatment Area to the C-43 Reservoir to remove excess nutrients from stored water; restoring Lake Hicpochee, including the addition of filter marshes; using a 70-acre site along the Orange River for an algal turf scrubber, which would remove nutrients from the water; and adding a Recycled Water Containment Area (RWCA) Program to store and reuse agricultural stormwater in Hendry County.

The City is also encouraging the emergency repair of the Herbert Hoover Dike, which is in poor condition and subject to failure.
